Malaysia vs North Korea: There Is No Such Thing As FOC

Published by The Malay Mail on 13 March 2017.
Malaysia will count on its international allies if the diplomatic situation with North Korea goes south, Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein said today.
The defence minister said Malaysia may not have enough military assets compared to Pyongyang if the two countries went to war, but it has other ways to counter the reclusive state which has nuclear weapons in its arsenal.
“We will deal with it when the time comes, but don’t think we are only dependent on our own assets,” the minister told the press at the Parliament lobby.
Hishammuddin said Malaysia has its own allies thanks to cordial bilateral relationships with many countries, pointing at the help it received from 26 countries during the search for the missing flight MH370.

The Government spent about RM456mil in the search for MH370, which disappeared exactly three years ago today.
Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said the underwater sweep over 120,000 sq km of the southern Indian Ocean involved Malaysia, Australia and China. The search was suspended on Jan 17 this year.
"The decision to suspend the operations is in line with the Ministerial Tripartite Meeting between Malaysia, Australia and China which was held in July 2016.
"Through the meeting, the three countries agreed that unless there are new clues or credible evidence available, only then a further search operation will be considered," Liow told William Leong (PKR-Selayang) in Parliament.
Leong had asked to state the costs incurred in the MH370 search, and if a report providing the full information and data will be released.

Najib defends #RedShirt’ rally, says not seditious or racist

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said even though several illegal rallies had been held before this to challenge the dignity of the Malays, they were patient. “But the Bersih 4 rally was considered the turning point when several participants went beyond the limit by stomping on the picture of national leaders and insulting the country's leadership,” he said at the National Silat Federation (Pesaka) Silat Assembly 2015 at Dataran Merdeka in Kuala Lumpur yesterday. Speaking before 15,000 members of Pesaka from all over the country, Najib said: "Slapped once, we did not do anything. The second time... nothing... the third time... nothing... but the fourth time had crossed the limit. Malays also have rights. The Malays will stand up when their pride is scarred, when their leader is insulted, condemned and humiliated. It's enough, do not repeat such vengeful acts"...He said the assembly of silat exponents tonight showed they were prepared to defend the nation's dignity from being humiliated. In his speech, Najib also reminded that the government could not be changed through street demonstrations.

"BAPA mertua saya juga ditipu, dikatakan ada rombongan ke Putrajaya, tapi sampai di Kuala Lumpur, disuruh pakai baju merah dan ikut perarakan dari Masjid Negara," kata Qystina dipetik laporan OhBulan. Demikian luahan seorang netizen termasuk beberapa lagi pelayar laman sosial mendakwa ibu, bapa atau saudara mereka ditipu untuk sertai himpunan tersebut.

"Lain kali tolong jujur. Beritahu cerita sebenar. Bukan menipu orang tua, cakap untuk kehadiran sambutan Hari Malaysia," kata Rie di Facebook.

Malaysian riot police on Wednesday fired water cannon on ethnic Malay protesters staging a pro-government rally in the capital Kuala Lumpur that has raised racial tensions in the multi-ethnic country.

Police briefly sprayed demonstrators who were chanting slogans denouncing Malaysia’s Chinese minority and demanding access to a tourist street lined with ethnic Chinese-run businesses, witnesses said.

At least several thousand members of the Muslim ethnic Malay majority marched through the heart of the capital to declare support for Prime Minister Najib Razak, a Malay who is facing calls to step down over a financial scandal.

Shadowed by heavy security, the demonstrators also claimed that long-held Malay dominance of the country was being challenged by the Chinese.

Dr M has raised questions about the heavy debt & usage of funds at 1MDB

Published on 11 September 2014 by Malaysian Insider.

Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has raised questions about the heavy debt and usage of funds at 1MDB in his first open criticism of the controversial government-owned investment company started by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

Writing in his blog yesterday, the former prime minister noted that 1MDB had spent billions of ringgit buying power plants from Genting and Ananda Krishnan and had paid above market prices for them.

He also lamented that 1MDB is heavily indebted. It has debt of around RM38 billion after just five years in operation as the country's sovereign wealth fund.

"The money for 1MDB is not from the country's surpluses. It is debt, billions of ringgit of debt that has added to the already high national debt," Dr Mahathir wrote.

The former PM, who recently wrote he was withdrawing support from Najib, said as the government was already facing a deficit budget problem, it would not have the ability to help pay the 1MDB debt.

He also noted that a large part of the money raised from the issue of debt paper by 1MDB has been sent to the Cayman Islands, a move which many has questioned.

Critics have complained about the lack of transparency in how the money is managed out of Cayman and it has been estimated that at least RM18 billion of 1MDB's money is parked there.

1MDB is Malaysia's second sovereign wealth fund after Khazanah Nasional Bhd.

Award-winning American Muslim scholar on Allah ruling: “We are laughing at you”

By Elizabeth Zachariah. Published by The Malaysian Insider on 22 October 2013.

A well-known American Muslim theologian has joined a long list of critics over the recent Court of Appeal ruling on the use of the word Allah, saying it was a "political decision more than anything else".

"This notion that Malaysian Muslims need to be protected by the court because you can't think for yourself, you can't make decisions on your own. We are laughing at you," said Reza Aslan, speaking on BFM Radio's Evening Edition programme yesterday.

"That you can control people's ideas, their behaviour, their faith and their minds simply by trying to control the words that they use, is absurd. It is an embarassment to a modern, constitutional, democratic and deeply Muslim state like Malaysia," he added.

Aslan insisted that Christians using the word Allah - which means God in Arabic - were not a threat to Islam.

"A Taliban put a bomb in the Quran and took it to a mosque in Pakistan, where Muslims were slaughtered on one of the holiest days in the Muslim calendar. You want to talk about threats to Islam? That's a threat to Islam," he said, in dismissing the argument that allowing Christians to use the word in their worship was a threat to Malaysian Muslims.

He was referring to an incident during the Aidiladha holidays, in which Afghan governor Arsala Jamal was killed while scores were injured after a bomb placed in a copy of the Quran went off in a mosque during the Eid sermon.

Aslan, who wrote the international bestseller No God But God: The Origins, Evolution, and Future of Islam, said he was mystified by the court ruling on October 14, stressing that the word Allah was merely an Arabic term for God, "any God".

"Allah is constuction of the the word al-Ilah. That's what the word is," he explained.

"Al-Ilah means 'The God'. Allah is not the name of God. Frankly, anyone who thinks that Allah is the name of God, is not just incorrect, but is going against the Quran itself. It is almost a blasphemous thought to think that Allah has a name.

"And this is not an interpretation. It is a historical fact," Reza added...

Aslan poured scorn on the court verdict, asking, "How can you read that and not laugh?"

Soon after the court ruling last week, he had taken to Twitter and remarked, "How stupid has Malaysia just become? In honor of Malaysia banning the word Allah by non-Muslims I suggest US ban the word 'twerking' by anyone over age of 17," he said, referring to a type of sexually provocative dance.

Much of Aslan's interview yesterday was made available on Podcast.

In it, he slammed those who argue that the faith of Malaysian Muslims can be undermined if Christians use the word Allah.

"This idea that not only should Christians not be able to use this word, but that using the word is somehow a threat to Islam... that Malaysian (Muslims) are so stupid if they hear a Christian use the word Allah, they will accidentally become Christians. I mean, the idiocy of that statement speaks for itself," he said.

Echoing many other Muslim scholars and writers, Aslan said Christians and Jews in the Arabian peninsula since before the time of the Prophet Muhammad had been referring to God as Allah.

"Why? Because they spoke Arabic... that's why. Not because Allah meant a specific God but because that it is nothing more than the Arabic word for God. It is not an opinion. It is a fact," he pointed out.

"Any Imam that tells you God has a name, is blasphemous. It is as simple as that. Allah is not God's name. Muslims do not own the word itself," said the 41-year-old Iranian-American, who is Visiting Professor of Islamic Studies at the University of Iowa.

Ministers Who Are Unhappy With Rakyat, Please Resign

Those who cannot accept Malaysia's first-past-the-post system should emigrate to practise their political beliefs elsewhere, newly appointed Home Minister Datuk Seri Zahid Hamidi said today. In his column in Utusan Malaysia, Zahid said the Pakatan Rakyat's claims of having won the 13th general election by popular vote were claims based on its interpretation of the list system, or single transferable vote. "These methods, as interpreted by the Opposition, are only used in countries where the head of state and ruling party are chosen in a proportionate representation electoral system where seats are won based on the number of votes received," he said. He added that Malaysia had inherited its first-past-the-post system from the UK. "Those who do not want to follow it can emigrate elsewhere to practise the list system, or single transferable vote system, used in republican nations. "If they are truly loyal citizens, they will accept the political and electoral system as enshrined in our Federal Constitution. They also have to admit the truth of defeat in the first-past-the-post system," he said.

Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor wants Malaysians to stop complaining over the skyrocketing price of properties. "If houses are expensive, then don't buy from the developer or else, don't grumble too much," he said, adding that everyone is bound by the simple rule of "willing buyer and willing seller". "If the houses developers are selling is expensive, then don't buy."

Those who have no confidence in the country’s education system as outlined in the National Education Blueprint can send their children to study abroad, said Education Minister II Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh. “If some people feel the system is not good and want to send their children overseas to study, the government cannot stop them. But the Ministry will work towards improving the country’s education system," said Idris after a forum in Shah Alam today. “We cannot please everyone. We have our own objectives and we will continue to implement them. It is not my own decision before we came up with this blueprint.

Malaysia Prime Minister Najib's Pious Platitudes

Written by  Bob Teoh. Original title: "Christmas card to the Prime Minister of Malaysia". Published by Malaysia Chronicle on 25 December 2012.

Yuletide greetings of peace, love, and blessings.

Notwithstanding the crucifix controversy during the Christmas reception for you by the Christian community last year, you have decided to join their celebrations this year again. This reflects boldness and courage on your part, Sir.

This augurs well for peace and harmony in the country. It goes without saying that we in Malaysia, continue to enjoy good inter-faith relations despite efforts of incendiary bigots in our midst to destroy it. Alhamdulillah, such heinous acts are but in vain as the Lord God Almighty is indeed sovereign over our beloved homeland. Hallelujah.

You fondly recall your meeting with Pope Benedict XVI last year, and that Malaysia has formally established diplomatic relations with the Vatican City. As pointed out by you, “another step forward came last week as the government announced that it will ensure that any Malaysian Christian who wishes to travel to Jerusalem for a pilgrimage is able to do so.” This reflects the gentle face of Islam surely.

You also pointed out in your Christmas blog, “… since becoming Prime Minister I have placed a lot of emphasis on the unifying concepts of 1Malaysia and the Global Movement of the Moderates. These concepts are partly about establishing a dialogue, which is important, but I am also determined that they lead to real action too.”

I am also encouraged that you would, “…have the pleasure of taking part in a tea party with members of the Christian community to mark Christmas and listen to their views.”

Unfortunately, Sir, I would not be at the Christmas reception today as I am away from the country. Allow me to air my views by way of this Christmas card to you and I trust I will have your ear. Surely you are unlike the guy from Pahang who wants to cut off his ears and throw them into the Pahang River, probably polluting it in the process. Silly man, that one.

The Orang Asli Slapping Case – Kelantan

It’s already over two months since a teacher at SK Bihai near Gua Musang in Kelantan had allegedly slapped four Orang Asli non-Muslim students, aged between 12 and 14, on 23 October because they had failed to recite the Muslim doa over lunch at their school. They may be non-Muslims but they this is not the way to treat bumiputras like them. Sir, your 1Malaysia unifying concepts compels you to act with urgency. Indeed, Islam must be seen as a tolerant religion.

Conversion to Islam of an under-age Iban schoolboy - Sarawak

You may not know it yet Prime Minister but a top Iban Catholic student of Kolej Datu Patinggi Abang Haji Abdillah or the prestigious residential Mara junior college in Kuching, was recently converted to Islam. This occurred just before his SPM exams without his parents’ knowledge or permission. He comes from a very remote village.

This is not an isolated case as church leaders there will tell you that this has been going on for a very long time as part of the Umno-BN Islamisation strategy in Sarawak and Sabah. Sir, you have two options. This first is to kill the rumour if indeed it turns out to be one. This does not take much effort or time to determine this matter one way or another.

If indeed the conversion did take place, then the school need to explain how an under-age conversion can be allowed to take in its premises without his parents’ consent or knowledge.

There are no two ways about it, Sir. You have to act fast and quick to assure the Christian community especially that of the Malay speaking bumiputra Christians of Sarawak and Sabah that your 1Malaysia is exactly what it means. No backdoor conversion, please.

Under-age conversion of four Christian students in FT Labuan

Recently, four under-age bumiputra Christian students, one Catholic and three Protestants, at a government residential school in the Federal Territory of Labuan island were converted to Islam. The conversion allegedly took place during a school activity. Local pastors have taken the matter up to the school but it had denied the activity was organised by the school.

A comprehensive report has been compiled by church leaders there to be handed to the Sabah state government. But Labuan is a Federal Territory and as Jakim, or the Islamic Development Department, is parked under your nose in the Prime Minister’s Office, it is within your power to intervene and act immediately to resolve the dispute without damaging religious harmony further. All you need to do is ask to see the voluminous report. And act on it. We have had enough of cow stealing but in this case, no more stealing sheep from the Good Shepherd please.

MyKad Islamisation of bumiputra Christians

Sir, you are already familiar with this case as it was discussed by your Cabinet just recently. Indeed, you had asked two Christian Cabinet ministers, one from Sabah and the other from Sarawak, to act on the complaint immediately. But what has happened? Nothing as usual.

Does this mean that the National Registration Department can ignore Cabinet directives? The complaint is that bumiputra Christians in Sabah (and Sarawak) have been classified by the NRD as Muslims automatically when issuing them their MyKad simply on the basis that they have “bin” and “binti” in their names.  The NRD has refused to rectify their errors. Instead it has asked complainants to go to the Syariah courts to get an order saying that they are Christians and indeed not Muslims. How more ludicrous can your administration get? Sir, if you mean what you say, then give the two federal minsters a kick in their butts and while at it make sure one lands on the bum of the NRD chief too. Can be done Sir, just execute the famous Bruce Lee one-leg-three- kicks.

The Allah word and the Alkitab

It has been three long years since the Kuala Lumpur High Court ruled on 31 Jan 2009 in favour of  Herald, the Catholic Weekly, that even though Islam is the religion of the Federation, this does not empower the government to prohibit the use of the word Allah by others. It also found that the word Allah was not exclusive to Muslims.

But your administration has appealed against it. The Court of Appeal is out on a stroll and not in any hurry to hear it. This is a travesty of justice. As Prime Minster you should not allow a useless judicial traffic cop to erect illegal road blocks to justice. The Titular Roman Catholic Archbishop of Kuala Lumpur was the one who sued your administration and won. I wonder what you will say to him when you meet him at today’s tea party?

In closing, dear Prime Minister, my hope and prayer is that Umno’s Islamisation agenda will reflect moderation and not turn out to be worse than PAS’s proposed hudud as what your friends in MCA are claiming.

Catholic Bishop Dr Paul Tan Chee Ing described Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak's remarks at a hi-tea hosted by the Christian Federation of Malaysia (CFM) yesterday as "pious platitudes we are used to hearing on these occasions".

http://www.themalaysianinsider.com/mobile/malaysia/article/i-am-pm-for-all-najib-tells-christians
Datuk Seri Najib Razak today reassured the Christian community in Malaysia that his government has not forgotten them despite growing feelings that they are being sidelined. The prime minister appeared to placate the community by praising the contributions of Christians in Malaysia, especially the role played by mission schools in raising the bar in education.

“I do not want to be a prime minister for only a particular section of the community. I’m a prime minister for all Malaysians, and I’ve said that repeatedly,” Najib reminded a Christian crowd at a Christmas party here. Najib cited the recent lift of a ban for Christian pilgrimage to Jerusalem as proof that the government recognises Christians as essential to the nation. “I believe that a God-fearing Christian, with strong values, would be good for Malaysia,” he added. Najib also called for Christian leaders to continue engaging in dialogue and to engage the government constructively.

Statutory Rape: One more escapes jail sentence

Published by The Staronline on 29 August 2012.
By Simren Kaur.

Another person has been bound over on a good behaviour bond for statutory rape. This time, it is an electrician found guilty of raping his 12-year-old girlfriend on two occasions last year.

Sessions judge Sitarun Nisa Abdul Aziz ordered Chuah Guan Jiu, now 22, to be bound over for three years on a RM25,000 good behaviour bond. She said the court took into consideration that Chuah was a young, first time offender. “We also considered the fact that the sexual act was consensual and that he is a school dropout,” she said when handing down the sentence.

Sitarun Nisa said that another consideration was Chuah’s future. Chuah, who was wearing a shirt and blue jeans, showed no emotion when the sentence was passed.

The court had on July 20 found him guilty of raping the girl, then aged 12 years and 10 months, at his flat in Air Itam between 7am and 1pm on July 18 last year, and between 2.25pm and 2.45pm the next day.

The offence under Section 376(1) of the Penal Code carries a maximum jail sentence of 20 years and whipping. On Monday, DPP Lim Cheah Yit said Chuah had coaxed the girl into skipping school and following him back to his flat on the pretext of him being sick.

They were dating and the accused should have protected her but he took advantage of her instead."

She asked him many times to take her to school but he said he felt unwell and took her to his home,” Lim had said when pressing for a deterrent sentence. In mitigation, counsel Yusuf Idris said his client earned RM30 a day and was staying with his parents and a younger sibling. “This is his first offence. He has a fixed job now and many years ahead of him,” he said. Yusuf said his client had repented and urged the court not to impose a custodial sentence in view of Chuah’s age.

The sentencing came in the wake of the case of former national youth squad bowler Noor Afizal Azizan who was bound over for RM25,000 to be of good behaviour for five years after he pleaded guilty to the statutory rape of a 13-year-old girl.

There was public uproar on Aug 8 when the Court of Appeal allowed Noor Afizal’s appeal against a High Court’s decision to sentence him to five years jail for the offence.

In a written judgment released on Monday, the Court of Appeal said Noor Afizal, who was 19 at the time of the offence, had not been “very much older” than the minor he had consensual sex with, had cooperated with the police, shown remorse, and given a guarantee that he would not commit such an offence again.

Related reports:

In a 14-page written judgment http://www.kehakiman.gov.my/directory/judgment/file/M-09-227-10-2011.pdf released yesterday, Court of Appeal president Justice Raus Sharif said Noor Afizal – 19 at the time of the offence and now 21 – had not “tricked the girl into submitting to him”. Sitting with him were Justices K.N. Segara and Azhar Ma’ah...

There was public uproar on Aug 8 when the court allowed Noor Afizal’s appeal against a High Court decision to sentence him to five years’ jail for statutory rape of the 13-year-old girl. In his oral decision, Justice Raus said he agreed with Noor Afizal’s counsel that public interest would not be served if he received a jail sentence when he had “a bright future”.

http://www.themalaysianinsider.com/malaysia/article/rapists-freed-by-courts-match-medical-definition-of-paedophiles/

Both national bowler Noor Afizal Azizan and Chuah Guan Jiu two young men who escaped jail terms despite raping 13- and 12-year-old girls respectively, may be classed as paedophiles according to international medical standards and psychiatrists here, suggesting the courts may have freed sexual predators who might repeat their crime. The World Health Organisation’s International Classification of Diseases (ICD) categorises paedophilia as “a sexual preference for children boys or girls or both usually of pre-pubertal or early pubertal age ”.

And according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) used by mental health professionals globally, paedophilia is the sexual attraction to pubescent or pre-pubescents aged 13 or younger, and the subject must be 16 or older with the child at least five years younger.

http://news.malaysia.msn.com/regional/bowler-statutory-rape-sex-consensual-court-says

MSN Malaysia readers were vocal in their overwhelming opposition to the verdict. Some of the following comments regarding the case include:

How can a 13 year old girl even know what she is agreeing to? Are judges now sick? How are we to uphold our law if Judges take crime lightly? I think ONE OF THE MAIN REASONS THAT CRIMES ARE FLOURISHING IN this country are because we have judges who are WEAK. -- rightofvictim

Has the girl a bright future too, your honor?? -- ERLISH

Outrageous! Even a world boxing champion was jailed in the US for his trysts with a woman under the age of consent. Oops, but then it was a different court. -- choun young

So what is the message we are getting here? If you show promise in sport, you are above the law? -- Sar3 Ong
